First Impressions

The radio is a lightweight but solid design. The controls are a little on the small side but are still easy to use.

The LCD display is large and can be seen without any problems at arms length. In particular the CHANNEL and CTCSS numbers are very clear.

The supplied battery pack is easy to install and charging is performed by placing the radio into the drop in charger.

Features

Channel Scan: The radio scans through the 8 channels until a signal is found. CTCSS and MEMORY scanning is also possible.

Memories: The unit has TEN memories for instant recall of Channel/CTCSS code.

Battery Indicator: A clear representation of the current battery condition is located at the bottom of the LCD display.

Light/Monitor: A quick press illuminates the LCD display. The monitor feature is selected by pressing and holding the light/monitor button. The squelch is opened so even the weakest of signals can be heard.

Key Lock: Pressing and holding the LOCK button activates the key lock. When activated all keys other than the Press To Talk and Call button are disabled on the radio.

VOX: This radio can be operated hands free by selecting the VOX function. The VOX sensitivity can also be changed with FIVE different settings !

Dual Watch: When selected the radio monitors 2 channels at the same time.

Roger Beep: The roger beep can also be turned on or off on this radio.

Call Tone: The radio has 5 selectable call tones.

Power Supply: The radio can be powered with 4 X AAA batteries or the supplied battery pack.

External Speaker/Mic: This radio has sockets for an external speaker and microphone.

Power Save:  The power save feature activates automatically when no key is pressed for more than 5 seconds.

VibrAlert: When selected the radio will vibrate and/or make a sound to let you know if you are being called by another station.

Voice Scrambler: Simple voice inversion for more secure communications.

Inside The Radio

The picture shows the inside of the Cobra MT900 Pro.

The arrows point to two pots on the board which will probably be the adjustment for the squelch and modulation.

The VibrAlert motor can be seen near the bottom of the picture.

The antenna is held to the board by one of the screws which holds the case together. Therefore it is detached from the board by simply opening up the radio !

UPDATE: The modulation pot is the one on the lower right.

Thanks to Aenyha (PE10EE) for the information.

Performance Test

The radio feels solid in the hand and is relatively light and easy to carry in your pocket.

The analog volume control is very smooth and the volume can be adjusted to suit any environment.

The radio performs very well on TX and RX. Contacts were made with several stations who gave good reports on outgoing audio.

I found that the roger bleep can get a little annoying at times so was turned off during testing.

Battery life was good using the supplied battery pack.

The voice scrambler worked well when communicating with my other radios although the pitch was slightly different (Each manufacturer seems to use a slightly different voice inversion so this is normal).

Conclusion

Another well designed radio, packed full of features. The large easy to read LCD display is great.

The inclusion of the battery pack and rapid charger make this radio good value for money.

Many thanks to Derek Watson of Watson's Hire Services who can supply this radio and many others.
