The Harrogate Rally 2001

Held by the Ripon & District Amateur Radio Society

April 22nd 2001 at The Harrogate Ladies College

Harrogate Ladies College

Myself and two friends, David and Jason, set off at 9am for the 2 hour drive to Harrogate on what was a dull Sunday morning. We had been to the 2000 rally and new that there would be plenty to see. I wasn't looking for anything in particular but both David and Jason had a good idea as to what they were after.

After a pleasant drive down, (Stopping en-route at a petrol station just south of Scotch Corner who's prices left a lot to be desired but who's collection of "Adult magazines and videos" is unrivalled across the North of England), we arrived at the Harrogate Ladies College which is a most impressive building but it appeared that the "Ladies" were out for the day as none could be seen !

The actual location of the Rally was in a building at the rear of the Ladies College. We each paid our 2 entrance fee and proceeded inside. There we were greeted by approximately 35 traders' stalls.

I immediately switched on my trust Goodmans Tracker and was amazed to hear the number of conversations on 446 Mhz. Adults, children and even traders were all using this band to keep in touch. Indeed it soon became apparent that the easiest way of finding the best bargains was to listen to the conversations as others relayed their findings over the air !

At one point ALL 8 CHANNELS were in use - Amazing !

This photograph shows David (Far Left) and Jason (Far Right) with two stall holders all proudly showing off their 446 handhelds.

PMR446 users everywhere !

The Goodmans Tracker/Binatone models seemed to be most peoples choice but several other makes were seen including the Telcom and even a Motorola Handie Pro which I was told by the operator was for sale !

QSL Communications Of course, the traders had plenty of Radio Equipment for sale. Everything for Amateur, CB, and PMR446 on a variety of stalls . . .
. . Not forgetting a large selection of Antennas. Radioworld

As usual at these events, computer equipment also made a significant appearance with several stalls selling computers and consumables.

Computers everywhere ! More computers !
RSGB The RSGB also made an appearance with a wide variety of books and magazines for sale.

There was also a "bring and buy" stall where I was amazed to see a Realistic DX-394 on sale for 80 (Tandy sold these off for 50 brand new just before the closure of their shops !). There were also several old CB radios and handsets which I wouldn't give houseroom but no-doubt someone bought them !

By the middle of the afternoon both David and Jason had found several bargains but I managed to resist the temptation to spend my hard earned cash in the main, only buying a small collection of adapters/connectors for a couple of home brew projects I have in the pipeline !

Money no object for Jason ! The big purchase of the day was Jason's new Yaesu VX-5R which he bought from our friends on the Radioworld stall.

A most enjoyable day was had by all and we shall be going again next year. I would like to thank all of the traders who took the time to talk to myself and also the organizers who put on a great rally for the North of England.
